Pain when feeding your baby needs to be assessed thoroughly.
Some initial discomfort when starting to breastfeed is not uncommon. However there is a world of a difference between the sensation of discomfort and actual pain and neither should not be confused with the other. A lot of mothers put up with pain and even worse damaged to the nipple tissue.
Skin is very sensitive to any abrasion or compression. Both can lead to giving up on breastfeeding sooner than the mother intended. Statistics show that 8 out 10 mothers give up in the UK before they have reached their feeding goals.
As soon as one feels repeated discomfort and notice redness or any damage to the nipple(s) including pinching with a line mark across the nipple one needs to actively seek help.
